Admission Requirements for Higher Education in Belgium
Belgium is a multilingual country with Dutch, French and German being widely spoken. Higher Education in Belgium is formed by the European development in the framework of the Bologna Process.
General Admission Requirements
Admission requirements are determined by each higher education institution.
Credentials Required
For Bachelor degree programme- Secondary School Diploma (Diploma van Secundair Onderwijs)
For Master Programme- Bachelor degree or its equivalent is required. Sufficient ECTS credits must be achieved.
For Doctorate/PhD- Master’s degree or its international equivalent is required.
Specific Admission Requirements- Exemption for Courses/Programmes
Depending upon the
higher education institution and course/programme the candidate wants to pursue, the passing of an entrance examination is needed for admission into a specific course/programme.
For Medicine or Dentistry Course
Students are required to appear for an entrance examination that is organized by the Government in order to gain admittance into the course/programme. The examination evaluates the pupil’s science knowledge, their IQ and their psychological ability to become a physician.
For Arts
For admissions into the arts courses/programmes, pupils are required to sit an entrance examination that is practical in nature and are coordinated by the colleges separately.
For Engineering Sciences
Students who want to study Engineering Science courses in Belgium are required for sit for an entrance examination that concentrates on mathematics. This examination is conducted in the French Community. After successful completion of the course/programme, students are awarded the degree of Master of Science (Dutch: Burgerlijk ingenieur, French: Ingenieur Civil).
For Management Sciences
The Management Schools in Belgium conduct admission tests that emphasize on individual motivation and pre-cognition of a specialized field.
Admission Process
To apply to a Higher education institution in Belgium, students must fill out an application form and submit it individually to each institution. If accepted, students would receive an acceptance letter from the institution.
This acceptance letter is needed to complete the registration process. After receiving the acceptance letter, apply for a
student visa (if applicable) and
scholarships.

- Completed Application Form
- Passport Copy or identity card
- A CV: It should include your educational and professional background, and other relevant details. The CV must be typewritten and written in English, French, German or Dutch.
- Copy of Educational Credentials: diploma, certificate or other official statement that provides access to the selected course/programme. (Translation required if not in Dutch, English, German or French language).
- Title of Dissertation (For Graduate Studies)
- Research Proposal (For PhD Studies): It should contain title, overview or literature review, positioning- understanding of the research issue and identifying the gaps, research design and methodology, and references.
Language Requirements
Proficiency in Dutch or French is required.
