French Community Scholarships and Grants for Students in Belgium

The French Community is in the southern part of Wallonia and in Brussels, Belgium. It includes University and Non-University Institutions. These institutions offer scholarships and grants to the students. Also, the government offers grants for various programmes.

Following are the Scholarships/Grants offered in the Belgium-French Community:

Doctoral Grants Awarded by the Scientific Research Fund (FRS-FNRS) 

Scientific Research Fund provides Doctoral grants for the preparation and presentation of a doctoral thesis.
  • Duration of Grants: 2 years (Renewed one time)
  • Application Process: In order to receive the grant, Candidates are required to fill out an application form and submit the same. Candidates must possess Master’s or Complementary Master’s degree. If the Master’s degree is not issued by a University of the French Community of Belgium, in that case, the candidates are required to get the recognition of its equivalence to a Belgian diploma and then are eligible to apply. 
  • Scientific Areas: All Areas of Study
  • Application Deadline: In January-February for a course/programme commencing in October

Wallonia-Brussels International Excellence Grants 

Wallonia-Brussels International (WBI) is a public authority responsible for the international relations of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. The WBI provides grants for Doctorate and Post-doctorate programmes in a University in Wallonia or Brussels. 

Eligibility- 
A citizen of any country, who possess a higher education Master’s II-level degree or equivalent education or a doctorate given by a foreign institution considered to be equivalent to Master’s II level by able authorities of Wallonia-Brussels, is qualified for this grant.

Types of Grants-
  • Doctoral grants of at least one year and these can be renewed thrice, while postdoctoral level grants are renewed only once.  
  • Short-term research grants for a period of 1 to 3 months.
Fields: Life Sciences, Environmental Technologies, Transport and Logistics, Aeronautics-Space, Mechanical Engineering, and Agro-industry. 

European Union Erasmus Mundus Grants

The European Union Erasmus Mundus programme is funded by the European Union and provides study grants for Master’s and Doctorate Studies selected under Erasmus Mundus. The programme comprises of the-
Joint Master’s and Doctorates Programme: The Erasmus Mundus Master’s and Doctorate are joint programme that lead to a Joint, multiple or double degree. This programme is for two groups of students-
  • Group 1: This group consists of students from countries defined in the Erasmus Mundus program as “third countries”, with the exception of the Enlarged European Area Member States that are neither resident nor have used their main activity, such as studies, employment, and so on for more than 12 months during the last 5years. Such students are eligible to apply for a type A Erasmus Mundus grant.
  • Group 2: This group consists of students who are citizens of the Enlarged European Area, or non-European students who have done their studies or professional work in one of the Member States of the EU, for a duration of over 12 consecutive months during the last 5 years. These pupils are qualified for a type B grant.
Applying Process:  Candidates must apply directly to the consortium that awards the Erasmus Mundus Master’s or Doctorate grants.  Each consortium sets its own conditions for the selection of the candidates.

AUF (Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie) Grants

The AUF provides several kinds of grants, such as
  • Master’s grants
  • Professional Internship grants
  • Doctorate and Post-doctorate grants
  • Cultural Internship grants
  • Training Specialisation grants
Applying Process: Candidates in order to get the AUF grants must be enrolled in a higher education institution that is a member of the AUF.

Grants from the International Organisations

International Organisations, such as UNHCHR (United Nations High Commission for Human Rights), UNESCO, International Labour Organisation (ILO), and etc. provide grants for doctorate studies in specific areas of study or research travel grants. To know more about it, visit their official websites. 

International UNESCO - L’OREAL Grants for Young Women Studying Life Sciences - Doctorate

The UNESCO - L'OREAL International grants are meant to encourage young women worldwide to take up research in the area of life science.  This programme awards grants to 15 young women whose work is associated with the field of life science. 

The Belgian Development Agency Grants for Master’s and Doctorate Studies

The Belgian Development Agency offers Study grants to citizens of partner countries.

Master’s Grants-
  • Awarded for:  For the Master’s courses-Finance 
  • Grant Duration:  1-2 academic years
Doctoral Grants- 
These grants are for pupils who wish to pursue doctorate. 
  • Support Offered: The grant includes a 16-month stay in Belgium to carry out the research work.
